The Vinyard Bordeauxs
On this page you will find information regarding the health and well being of the Dogue de Bordeaux. We also have a few suggestions that we think will be very beneficial for you on caring for your Dogue. We certainly do not have all the answers, but would like to share our suggestions for you about things we have learned along the way.
Like people, our dogs are what they eat. Here at the Vinyard Bordeauxs we feed high end dog food that is a grain product. ( Vets are saying that Grain-Free food can cause heart issues). We recommend feeding your puppy a dog food that is made up of all human grade ingredients. We believe that feeding your dog a better dog food will give him a better quality of life. Read your dog and puppy food labels so you know what you are feeding your baby. Contrary to poplular opinion it is alright to feed your Bordeaux healthy human food. Go ahead, give them burger, rice and those leftover green beans.
Dogues, as with many of the other large, deep chested breeds are prone to bloat....a twisting of the stomach that can lead to death. Although experts are not sure as to the exact causes, it is believed that excessive exercise and excitement after eating and drinking can cause bloat. Bloat is commonly traced to dogs gulping air that gets caught in the stomach. To prevent this, avoid feeding your Dogues immediately before or after exercise. Another recommendation is to elevate their food and water dishes so they are not eating off of the ground.
Do not let your dog get fat. Fats dogs have lots of health problems. Feed a good healthy diet. Carrying too much weight at a young age is going to add stress on soft puppy bones and this DOES have an effect on skeletal development.
New owners need to be very careful not to over exercise this breed, especially as a puppy. This means no jogging until after the dog is 18 months old. This also means not exercising to the point of exhaustion, or taking the puppy for too long of walks.
Be extremely cautious with the Dogue de Bordeaux as they can overheat very easily. Make sure they have plenty of water and are not left outside in the sun. Remember, they are a very big dog with a very short snout, so overheating can happen very quickly. Our Bordeauxs absolutely LOVE the water. Whether it be the pool, lake or just the hose, this is one simple way to keep them cooler in the hotter months when they are playing outside.

Your puppies happiness is in your hands. Establish basic training as well as a set of rules for family and pet to live by. And remember, a crate ia a valuable tool, and most pups welcome the confines. It provides a closed and safe haven. It should never be used as a punishment.
Although children and puppies are made for eachother, remember, child / puppy playtime should always be supervised. Even if your pup is well socialized with children, youngsters are impulsive and may accidently hurt eachother in play.

Pick a veterinarian that you are comfortable with and that will take the time to answer all your questions. If you do not currently have a vet, ask your friends who they use and who they would recommend. It may also help to find a vet that
is familiar with the snub nosed / giant breeds. A good vet is an ever present help in the time of trouble!
The Dogue de Bordeaux is a fast growing dog. As a result puppies can sometimes suffer from what is called Eosinphilic Panosteitis "Pano", or better known as growing pains. Pano is an acute lameness unrelated to trauma. It might shift from one location to another as the puppy grows.
Like most large boned dogs, hip dysplaysia is a common problem of the breed. It should be understood that this is more common in the giant breeds due to their size. Please make sure not to over exercise your dog and be super careful on tile floors and stairs and don't overfeed your Bordeaux.
Special Note: The Dogue de Bordeaux is very sensitive to anesthesia. A 'normal dose' can be lethal. Take extra special care in choosing a veterinarian who is familiar with the breed.
